En 2023, dans le cadre d’un projet collaboratif avec mon collègue Steven Fedorowicz (projet sponsorisé par le comité IRI de notre université Kansai Gaidai), je me suis de nouveau intéressée aux différents festivals de Kyoto, notamment le Gion matsuri et le Jidai matsuri. De son côté, Steven s’est penché sur le festival de danjiri qui se déroule chaque année dans son quartier à Osaka.
Plus précisément, notre approche en tant que photographes / chercheurs (voir nos profils ici et ici) a été de documenter / apprécier les différents aspects de chaque festival: leur format (parades qui se passent dans la rue), leur organisation et, peut-être le plus important, les participants. Dans le cas de Steven, les participants sont les gens de son quartier, qu’il connaît personnellement. Dans mon cas, les participants qui ont attiré mon regard sont les Geishas de Kyoto, qui sont d’interessantes “icônes” à repérer lors des parades.
Le résultat de nos recherches visuelles et sociologiques est une exposition, à voir à la galerie JARFO ART SQUARE (lien ici), du 10 au 13 Février prochain (Plus d’informations ci-dessous).

In 2023, as part of a collaborative project with my colleague Steven Fedorowicz (project sponsored by our university’s IRI committee), I have once again taken interest in different festivals that take place in Kyoto, notably Gion matsuri and Jidai matsuri. On his end, Steven focused on a danjiri festival that is organized every year in his neighborhood in Osaka.
More precisely, our approach as photographers / researchers (see our profiles here and here) was to document / appreciate the different aspects of each festival: their format (street parades), their organization and, maybe the most important, the participants. In Steven’s case, the participants are the people living near him and whom he knows personally. In my case, the participants who most appealed to me are the Kyoto Geishas, who are such interest “icons” to spot and look at in the parades.
The result of our visual and sociological research is an exhibition, to see at JARFO ART SQUARE gallery (link here), from February 10th to 13th (More information below).
